India’s planned Tipaimukh HEP project and proposed dam has sparked fierce debates in both countries, with particular fears being raised in Bangladesh about the adverse environmental impact it may bring about. As concerns grow that Bangladesh may not be able protect its own interests against a more powerful neighbour, our leaders accuse each other of trying to gain political mileage out of the issue.

The recent hot topic in our news and print media as well as in the different forum / organization, the mentioned issue- Tipaimukh Dam is very much notable no doubt at all. Situation is like confrontation between two groups as opponent. But actually it’s shouldn’t be like that rather both party should think the greater interest of Bangladesh but not their individual goal or benefit whether it may be politically or economically. Three important events have taken place in Bangladesh since I wrote a commentary last Monday. These are: (1) The Indian external affairs minister has visited Bangladesh barely a month after the AL government took office, (2) Student agitations on various issues have again taken a violent and destructive turn and (3) The Indians are going ahead with the construction of the massive Tipaimukh barrage – all of these events collectively impinge on us in more than one ways but the one which directly affects our very ability to survive is the issue of water-sharing of some 53 common rivers between India and Bangladesh.
